PDF export in browser – differences in functions – troubleshooting
When using SNH, the function that enables you to export a PDF from the browser view may fail to perform satisfactorily. Indicators of this include::
- Numerous pages with no content.
- Missing content.
- Repeated content.
This is why we have put together the most frequently asked questions regarding PDF export options and troubleshooting methods for you here.
In general, the PDF function can be used in the browser area when an analyzable content harvest is not required. The PDF export function can be used when it is sufficient to save the timeline of a target profile as a PDF file, for example. Following the export, it might not be possible to find existing posts, images or users in the SNH Data Explorer. A normal data harvest is required for this.
Alongside normal data harvests, SNH supports three different functions for saving a webpage as a PDF.
The “PDF Print” function uses the browser’s built-in print feature to output the file as a PDF. The use of this function can be compared with manually scrolling through a webpage in a “standard” web browser and then printing the page.
On newer webpages this could mean that not all of the data is included in the PDF or that only the areas that are visible to the user are included. In social networks this behavior can be seen on certain Facebook views (including the timeline, among others), Instagram and Twitter.
This behavior is intentional on the part of the website operator and cannot be influenced by the browser or SNH. This is why the SNH function “PDF Capture” was introduced to counteract this effect.
Pro: Fast, PDF is searchable
Cons: Presentation may not be clearly arranged, content is sometimes missing
Range of application: All webpages. Account data can be hidden on webpages where the module is currently in use (e.g. timeline).
The PDF Capture function uses one of SNH’s own features to save content as a PDF. This function also scrolls down to the end of the webpage. Since the contents are saved as a screenshot and merged into a PDF, the PDF files that are generated in this way are not searchable.
In exceptional cases the same screenshot may repeat on every page of the PDF document. In these instances, the SNH browser’s cache file is likely damaged. This can be resolved through Level 2 Maintenance and rebooting.
Pro: Hiding functions of web pages are ineffective, and all content is included.
Cons: PDF not searchable, slow
Range of application: All webpages. Account data can be hidden on websites where the module is currently in use (e.g. timeline).
The Quick PDF function is a PDF Capture feature that has been optimized for timelines.
This function does not generate a searchable PDF file either.
Pro: Page hide functions are ineffective and all content is included. Disruptive timeline elements are hidden.
Con: PDF is not searchable.
Range of application: Timelines on the current social network
